The Ant Colony

While cutting firewood, my chainsaw's teeth tore through the fallen log revealing a colony of black ants. Their home was sliced in two and many ants scurried to escape, while others remained in shock and motionless. A few days later I returned and the ants had completely abandoned their nest. Upon close inspection, I discovered the nest consisted of elaborate galleries and paper thin tunnels, each perfectly smooth as if they had been sanded by a craftsman's hand. A nest this size could have been home for as many as 1, 000 ants! But they are gone now. Moved on and hoping the chainsaw's razor sharp teeth will never disturb their home in the future.
