The Elm's Last Sunset

This giant elm tree has stood tall and strong for decades on Eighty Acres. To the cattle below it gave shade, to the birds it gave a place to nest, and for me, it framed a thousand sunsets. But now it is dead. The neighbor will be here soon with his chainsaw to cut it down and use the wood to keep him warm this winter. In the days ahead, I plan to walk by and rest upon its stump and remember the elm's out stretched arms, its grace in the wind, and its last sunset.
